5 wineries to visit in Rioja

Going on a getaway to Rioja and visiting any of its incredible wineries is a fantastic plan for anyone who loves wine.

In addition to drinking good wine and seeing landscapes of beautiful vineyards, visiting a winery allows you to meet the people behind the wine, and learn about the history of the project and their philosophy. Everything that goes into the bottle and its meaning.

Rioja is one of the most renowned and most historic areas, not only in our country but also internationally. Due to its orographic and climatic diversity, it is divided into three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Oriental and Rioja Alavesa. The main variety is Tempranillo followed by Garnacha Tinta, Graciano and Mazuelo. As for white grapes, we mainly find Viura, Malvasía, White Garnacha and Tempranillo Blanco.

There are more than 600 wineries in Rioja therefore it is difficult to only choose 5, but here we go!

Marqués de Murrieta is a hallmark of excellence. This winery combines the best of tradition and modernity. Its wines are considered among the best, not only in this area but also internationally. Its wine Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Blanco 1986 is considered one of the best in the world.

The origins of the Marqués de Murrieta winery are linked to the origins of wine in Rioja, as in 1852 Don Luciano Murrieta produced the first Rioja wines, and was also the first to export it beyond the national borders. Its stunning 300 hectares of vineyard surrounding the winery add to its historic appeal as a century-old winery.
